A Conventional Lightning Arrester is designed to protect the building during lightening. A conductor is mounted on the top of the building and connected to the ground using a wire or earthing strips. The lightening on the building will strike the lightening protection rod. Instead of passing through the building, it will be conducted harmlessly to ground through the wire attached.
A single component in a lightning protection system is a conventional spike lightning protection rod. This rod is mounted on the highest position of the building at regular intervals. This lightning protection system has a rooftop network of electrical conductors, several conductive paths from the roof to the ground earthing, bonding connections to metallic articles within the building and a grounding network. Copper or aluminum is used for making rooftop lightning rod and copper/aluminium/GI strips or wires create a down path.
The applications of lightning protection systems are following, which are protected against lightning damage:
Individual lightning rods are also known as strike termination devices, finials or air terminals.
